Baptism Preparation

Baptism Your child's initiation into the Catholic faith begins with Baptism, will be completed with their Confirmation, and will culminate in their joining the entire Christian community at the Table of the Eucharist. This entire faith journey from the very start, is a solemn responsibiltiy taken on by you, the parents, and shared by your faith community here at Christ the King. Working together, we can ensure that this family of faith you are choosing to raise your child within, becomes a source of life, inspiration, hope and support.

The welcoming of a new member to our faith community is a joyous time for everyone. At Christ the King we look forward to each and every Baptism celebrated in our parish. In planning to celebrate such a momentous occasion at Christ the King, the following points should be helpful;

Baptism Preparation classes are a must for every parent requesting the baptism of their child (yes even if it's your fourth!). Have you gone through several prep. classes in the past? We would love to have someone with your expertise to help lead the next one!

These classes are offered two times each year (usually spring and fall) depending upon demand. A quick phone call to the office will confirm the date of the next set of classes. We meet for four consecutive Wednesdays from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM with the baptisms being celebrated at one of our regular weekend Masses following the final class.

As the date of the first class approaches, you will be contacted by a member of the Baptism team. Together you can set up an appropriate time for them to drop by and leave you with a packet of information we like all parents to have prior to coming to the classes. This is also a good time to have any questions answered.

"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission..." -The Catechism of the Catholic Church #1213

Who can be baptised at Christ the King?
Any child can be baptized at Christ the King provided that at least one parent is Catholic and is a registered member of Christ the King parish. Been attending for awhile and just haven't registered? Do so asap so we can welcome you properly!
What if we attend another parish? It is strongly recommended that your child be baptized in the parish community you attend on a regular basis. If this is not possible we will require a letter from your parish priest giving us permission to baptize your child.
Do we really have to take classes to have our child baptized? The truth is, as adults we struggle with even the very basics of our faith. What we learned in school and growing up in the Church does not give us the kind of foundations needed in order to fulfill our role as the primary teachers of the faith to our children. As a result, our diocese requires that parents attend baptism classes prior to the baptism of each child.

What is a Godparent? In the context of a Catholic baptism for children, the role of the godparent is very specific. Your child's godparent will be required to make their own promises to teach the Catholic faith to your child and to support you in your role as teacher of the faith.
Who can be a Godparent?Anyone can be a godparent who; is over the age of 16, and is themselves a fully initiated and practicing Catholic.
What about people of other Christian faiths? Due to the specific role as teacher of the Catholic faith, members of other Christian faith communities are unable to serve as Godparents. They are, however able to serve as witnesses to the Christian life and can be indicated as such in our baptismal records.
How many godparents do we need? Only one godparent is required.
What if my Catholic godparent cannot make it to the baptism? Proxies or stand-ins are perfectly acceptable on those occasions where a godparent is unable to be present. Anyone can be a proxy. They will be required to offer promises on the godparents' behalf but they would not be recorded as a godparent themselves.

When are the next classes?

Registrations for our pre-Easter classes are now closed. Please Check back in September for the exact dates of our fall classes.
