 What is the Catholic Church Really About?

We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 PM in a warm & relaxed environment where we discuss such topics as:

Why do priests choose a life of celibacy over marriage?

Who is the Pope, and when is he so important?

Why does the Catholic Church actually teach about same sex marriages?

Why do Catholics honour Mary and not worship her?

What does the Church teach about Heaven, hell and Purgatory?

How do Catholics read and interpret the Bible differently than other Christian denominations?

A testimony from our last course...

My RCIA Journey 

I would like to first give thanks to God for the grace and strength granted to me to be able to go on this journey. Attending school, working and undergoing the RCIA at the same time was only possible by God’s grace and mercy upon me. I am also very grateful to God for the opportunity to be part of the Church and to go through the RCIA under the tutelage of great speakers. 

RCIA gave me the opportunity to really understand the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Despite my association with the Church, RCIA revealed a lot of information that I did not know, it clarified and improved my understanding of the doctrines of the Church. 

One of the topics very dear to my heart was the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church. RCIA gave me the opportunity for the first time where I really understood the true meaning of the sacraments. Despite hearing about them separately and on different occasions in the past, I really did not understand what they really meant. But I am glad I went through the RCIA where it was broken down to bits for me to really understand the true significance of the sacraments. 

Going through the RCIA brought me closer to God, as it taught me to study the scriptures on different levels - what the words literally means, how the text refers to Jesus, how the verse applies to me and my personal morality and the heavenly meaning. Using this method in my daily life has helped me to understand the Bible and to pray with God’s Word. 

The opportunity to attend the Holy Thursday mass through to the Vigil shown the light on the true meaning of Easter. Despite celebrating Easter for several years, this was the first time that it really sunk down in my spirit the significance of the sacrifice that our Lord Jesus paid by his death and resurrection. It was really an awesome experience. 

The entire RCIA experience for me was a time of reflection on the gift we have in Jesus Christ and his mother Mary and how this is revealed in the doctrines of the Church.
